Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Meta is moving toward automating the work of midlevel software engineers, with plans to expand the use of AI for coding across its platforms. According to Zuckerberg, the company is working on advanced AI systems capable of handling tasks typically performed by engineers, potentially making coding a fully automated skill in the near future.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Zuckerberg said, “By 2025, we expect to have AI systems that can perform the work of a midlevel engineer, effectively writing and maintaining code for our platforms.” While implementing such AI systems might involve significant initial costs, Zuckerberg anticipates a future where all app development and AI generation at Meta will be driven by automation. Currently, midlevel software engineers at the company earn total compensation nearing mid-six figures, highlighting the potential cost savings of AI-driven coding.

This announcement comes amid broader changes at Meta. On Tuesday, Zuckerberg revealed that the company plans to replace third-party fact-checkers with community-driven notes, a model similar to the approach used on Elon Musk’s X. The move has drawn criticism from fact-checking organizations, with dozens signing an open letter calling the change a “step backward.”

In addition, Meta is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. A memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources, stated, “We will no longer maintain a dedicated DEI team.” These changes are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to reshape its organizational priorities and streamline operations.
